trade deadline part 2: jokinen

the really funny part, to me, is that so many of my hockey-loving friends around the country and all of the hockey pundits think this is a great trade. "jokinen plays so well under keenan !!" they suggest. hm. well, i guess it remains to be seen but i think lombardi + prust + a FIRST ROUNDER is far too steep, here.

i think i'm most afraid of the mathematics:
1. there's no way that we're still under the cap
2. our roster loses two starters, here, and gains only one.
3. sutter does not give up first rounders without getting first rounders back.

ie: sutter's not done. and that is what terrifies me the most.

this team might look alot different by the end of the day.

****UPDATE: nhlnumbers.com is suggesting we're ever so slightly under the cap.... so maybe sutter IS done !!! ... we're still a player or two short, mind you.

I think the third rounder you're getting with OJ balances it out a bit. But I do understand.

Trust me, all of us in Wild Nation are moaning about having to play you guys again. It was bad enough already...

Isn't Lombo/1st round/Prust too much? I've been reading your post for awhile...however I've been too lazy to comment before. I guess the boredom of work and this particular deal has me worked up! Do you think this is going to play out like the Ference trade?

thanks for reading !!!

yeah, personally i think lombardi's worth outweighs his pricetag. that, in itself, makes this a bad trade. throwing in a first rounder and a good 4th line plugger makes it worse. lombo played some clutch minutes (PK especially) that will be sorely missed....

i'm warming up to it, however. if this is sutter's last move of the day then i'll be okay with it, i think. it gives boyd (if we can re-sign him for good value) an opportunity to step up and prust's role can be filled by guys on one-way contracts (like van der gulik, for example).

as for chemistry, well the lockerroom already looks a lot different than it did two weeks ago (with all the injuries), and lombardi wasn't iggy's bestie the way ference was. plus he's much quieter of a guy, so i think his loss will be softened by all of those things....

what do YOU think ???

speaking of "numbers", what number does jokinen wear?

The more I think about this deal, the more I'm starting to like it...

Jokinen was #12 in Phoenix, but he was #21 in LA, and #61 with the Islanders...

I say he goes back to #21, cause he's obviously not going to be #12...

Oh, and he wore #24 with the Springfield Falcons, but that number is obviously already taken as well...

I wonder about Leopold taking #44 though...

he'll be #21 for sure.

and leopold ? my bet is #8

It's my pleasure reading your blog & some of the others you link to. I came across it a few years back while I was out East, so it provided some meaningful conversation compared to 24/7 Leafs Nation talk.

Yeah good point about the difference in locker room dynamics between the 2 trades. Ahh Ference, didn't really appreciate his "role" but here we are always talking about him. At least the Bruins are amassing 03/04 Flames.

The 1st rounder + Prust is what got me. Like you said, I thought Sutter only swaps 1st rounders. Not sure how the fact it's Calgary's option (09 or 10 is it) helps...? The 3rd rounder, meh. I do like the Leopold re-acquisition. Someone tried to give me nightmares by talking about an Eriksson call up.

Plus can the Flames sign Cammalleri with the Jokinen hit to the cap???

personally, i didn't think the flames could sign the squid BEFORE today. it will be interesting to see how sutter manages things this summer: aucoin's 4 mil will be off the books but that's the only real cashgrab. if the cap does, in fact, go down significantly it will be tough to re-sign moss, boyd, pardy, cuMac (or equivalent) and fill holes vacated by aucoin, bertuzzi, squid, roy, and leopold.

i think major strides must be made by the babies: roster spots for at least one or two younger up-and-comers will have to be made, and sutter will have to pick and choose which vets to hang on to...

this is largely the reason i prefer lombardi to jokinen: the difference in cost is literally another halfway decent veteran roster player next year.
